I have been wanting to talk about this topic for a while, but I just now realized why it took me so long.
I realize that being a CrossFitter allows us to be more than we were before.
It makes us stronger, more confident, more energetic, and just MORE!
With this newly found self pride, I understand that it can also come with an overwhelming sense of confidence. Which, if left unchecked, can turn into a humility crushing poison.
We have all seen the Elitist approach to CrossFit from the shirts that say P90X is "man aerobics" or that Yoga "is for weaklings" or the oh so popular "My warm up is your workout!"
When did everyone decide that what they did was so much better than everyone else?
Although I know some of the CrossFit Elitists and Purists out there will cringe at this, but I have seen some amazing results come from many different areas of fitness like p90x, the YMCA, or any other globogym.
However, in my mind, what makes CrossFit amazing (and yes, even better) is the community that we build... a community of Humble Athletes. A community that does not judge, but instead encourages.
Philippians 2:3-11
Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. ...
I have met some amazing athletes in my CrossFit journey. And I have met some other athletes that live inside of a bubble where they think everyone else outside of the bubble is wrong.
The ones that really care about the sport will sit and talk to you about their journey. And it is so humbling to talk them about their performances and hear them talk about their communities, their families, and their journeys that got them here.
You get a glimpse into an amazing world of Humble CrossFitters.
No matter how strong they are, or how fast they finished, many of them still know that they have more work to do.
They do not boast about being the best, or even the strongest person in their sport. They just come in, do work, and try to be a little better than they were yesterday.
2 Corinthians 11:30
If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.
So the challenge for us, for our community, is to stop judging... make a decision to change lives... and be a Humble CrossFitter.
